DRESS For The Job You Want

In Act 2.5 it’s important to reflect a smart, energetic and stylish image when interviewing for a promotion or new job. We know women at this stage of life have far more attributes in the workplace than many of their younger counterparts. They possess experience, talent, loyalty, reliability, and workplace wisdom, but first impressions matter and if you’re not dressed in a manner that echoes those wonderful assets, you’ll never get past the first interview.

Today’s workplace dress code reflects and reinforces a company’s culture, so before you select the perfect outfit for the interview, do your homework. Learn the culture of the company and be intentional about your choice. For example, if you’re going for a job in finance or legal, the dress code may be more conservative, so a modern style suit would be appropriate. Don’t dust off the suit you wore a decade ago as it will age you more than you think. Interviewing for a position in retail? A stylish dress or skirt which allows your personal style to shine through might be what lands you the job. If you’re hoping to work at a small business or tech company, the clothing may be on the casual side. Even though jeans may be appropriate, make sure they look crisp and new. Pair them with a pressed white blouse and flats to stand out.

In addition to the clothes you wear, pay attention to your hands and feet. Splurge on a manicure and make sure your shoes are stylish but also comfortable. Kitten heels, flats and wedges are perfect for adding chicness, while affording you comfort. Chunky or bold jewelry are best left at home. You want the interviewer to notice you, not the baubles around your neck or wrist.

Being stylish doesn’t need to break the bank, but you may need to spend a little to leave an impression. If you’re unsure of what to wear, seek advice from a friend or ask a personal shopper at a nearby department store.

Your work experience should stand out over your appearance, but in today’s environment, especially when many companies embrace youth, the way you present yourself might be the key to landing that new position.

The most important element is to wear something that will boost your confidence, because when you look good, you feel good.
