Women Run Circles Around Men

If those words are music to your ears, you’re not alone. For most of us in Act 2.5, we have waited a long time for the business world to embrace the positive attributes we bring to the workplace.

Romy Newman, President and Co-Founder of Fairygodboss wrote an insightful article published in Inc., entitled, “Women run circles around men when it comes to this key skill of the future.” The key skill is their social skills.

Not surprised? In general, women tend to have an advantage over men when it comes to emotional intelligence. One doesn’t have to pour through issues of Psychology Today to know that men tend to tune out emotionally when a problem arises, whereas a woman will typically stay emotionally connected.

In addition, Romy writes that according to a 2015 Global Empathy Index, “the top 10 companies with the most empathy generated 50% more net income than the bottom 10.”  This tangible result shows that women in key positions have a positive effect on the bottom line.

Even though women make up close to half of the nations workforce, they are in the minority when it comes to holding top positions in corporations. Many experts believe that closing the gap will have a big impact on the economy.

This is wonderful news for us in Act 2.5 as businesses recognize the need to bring gender diversity to top level positions. So the next time there’s a promotional opportunity, ask for it, and  if you don’t get it the first time, ask again. Make them see your experience and ability to collaborate with others across the organization are must haves for greater profits.
